Note from BW of Brazil: Another cop story from Rio. This notorious mob of law enforcement has done it again! Last year, Military Police made headlines and left of us mourning due to the horrendous shooting and dragging death of Cláudia Ferreira da Silva. We saw mother and daughter, Maria de Fátima dos Santos and Alessandra de Jesus, gunned by these same forces. We’ve seen numerous black males lose their lives at their hands. And recently a video surfaced showed the chase and shooting murder of 22-year old nursing student Haíssa Vargas Motta in a moving car. In today’s story, we don’t even know the woman’s name or her current physical condition, but yet just another example of how (black) citizens are treated in Rio and Brazil in general by law enforcement agents. See the video below.

Despite attempts to keep them at a distance, journalists and demonstrators followed the action of the police, who were unidentified, and recorded the action. Thrown on the ground, the woman repeatedly screamed “ele quebrou meu braço” (he broke my arm), while one of the officers tried to handcuff her.

The woman was to the taken to the 7th Police Precinct. There are no confirmations of her identification and her health status, but according to Justiça Global, the lawyers of the Instituto de Defensores de Direitos Humanos (DDH or Institute of Human Rights Defenders), of the Comissão de Direitos Humanos da Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB meaning the Commission on Human Rights of the Bar Association of Brazil) and the Coletivo de Advogados do Rio de Janeiro (Collective of Lawyers of Rio de Janeiro) (RJ-CDA) following the case.

  1. WOW! I am curious about the back story of this video…I am wondering if it was REALLY necessary to drag this woman like a duffle bag and sit on her after breaking her arm. What could she POSSIBLY done to deserve this much aggression from so many large men with guns?? I would LOVE to see them give this much nasty attention the corrupt politicians and policy makers who commit atrocious crimes against the public (by stealing handfulls of public money) all day every day!!
