Note from BW of Brazil: Of course, people are still concerned with what the future will bring to Brazil with the election of Jair Bolsonaro as Brazil’s 38th president, but the last election cycle also brought about some pleasant surprises, particularly for black women candidates. And in the state of Minas Gerais, these surprises have been history-making. You gotta admit, with the still unsolved mystery of the murder of Rio councilwoman Marielle Franco after almost a whole year, more black women are rising to the occasion and declaring themselves present!
Black women occupy the state legislature of Minas Gerais for the first time in history
By Pedro Borges
The election of Ana Paula Siqueira (Network), Andreia de Jesus (PSOL) and Leninha (PT) represents the political force of black women in Minas Gerais; state also elected Áurea Carolina (PSOL) as federal congressman, with 162,740 votes
For the first time in the history of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG), there will be at least one black woman in the position of deputy. The advance was so significant that the house will receive three black women, Ana Paula Siqueira (Network), Andreia de Jesus (PSOL) and Leninha (PT).
The ALMG contimues the pattern of other power spaces in Brazil, with a greater representation of whites. According to the self-declaration of the elected deputies, it is verified that 4 pretos (blacks) and 12 pardos (brown/mixed), that together form the black racial group, will compose the house next to 61 whites.
The black female deputies obtained an expressive vote, with 51,407 for Leninha, 23,372 for Ana Paula Siqueira and 17,689 for Andreia de Jesus. It is worth noting that this was not the only victory of black women of Minas Gerais. The state also scored a victory for Aurea Carolina (PSOL) with 162,740 votes.
Victory celebration
Andreia de Jesus and Áurea Carolina participate in the Muitas, meaning ‘many’, a political movement that achieved an expressive victory in the 2018 elections. Nowadays, Gabinetona, an open and popular collective mandate represented by councilors Bella Gonçalves and Cida Falabella in Belo Horizonte (capital of Minas Gerais), inaugurates an unprecedented experience in Brazil, occupying three spheres of the Legislative, with Andréia de Jesus in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais and Áurea Carolina in Câmara dos Deputados (House or Chamber of Deputies), in the capital city of Brasília.
The group organized a commemoration for February 1st, beginning at 9:30 am, at Rua Ouro Preto, 1421, Santo Agostinho, Belo Horizonte. After the concentration, the group leaves in court with conga guards and carnival blocos towards the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais to bring “force” and “axé” to the mandate, as the press release says.
