Note from BW of Brazil: The last time this blog mentioned the name Whitney Houston it was after the tragic death of pop/R&B diva back in December of 2012. The meaning of Whitney Houston and her success in the mainstream music market as a black woman is something that should be noted particularly in a country like Brazil where blackness is treated as if it doesn’t exist, this in a country where the majority of 200 million citizens declare themselves to non-white. Due to Brazil’s obsession with whiteness, a black woman could never rise to the heights of pop superstardom that Houston was able to achieve. This is true even a region like predominantly black Bahia, where a popular Afro-Bahian style of music is promoted through the faces of white singers. But speaking of Houston, recently another controversial figure turned heads in her tribute to Houston. Why is this person controversial? Read the story below.

Ariadna is a former participant of the Big Brother Brasil reality show
Ariadna, a former participant of the highly successful reality series Big Brother Brasil, was transformed into the late diva Whitney Houston for a piece on the program TV Fama. After the session, the former contestant said she loved the result of the transformation. “At first, I confess that I didn’t believe the similarity. But when I saw the end result it surprised me. I looked just like her. I never imagined looking so similar. It was pretty cool,” she said the newspaper Extra.

Ariadna transformed into the late pop star to imitate her popular video “It’s Not Right It’s OK”.
The transformation is Ariadna’s homage to celebrate the 17th edition of the São Paulo Gay Parade, which takes place this Sunday, June 2.

For those who don’t remember our previous post that featured Ariadna, the transformation into Whitney Houston was not the only change that Ariadna has undergone. Born on June 3, 1984, Ariadna was originally born a male with the name Thiago Silva Arantes.

Thiago would undergo a sex change on a trip to Thailand. In August of 2009, Thiago legally adapted a new identity and became Ariadna Thalia (like the name of the Mexican actress and singer, star of novelas like Marimar and Maria do Bairro). Ariadna continues to carry Silva Arantes as her last name.
See Ariadna’s transformation in the video below. It’s in Portuguese, but check it out anyway!
