A rare case in medicine, baby born at 5 months survives in Salvador, Bahia
Doctors came to take care of a child born weighing 622g (1.37 lbs). Today the girl weighs 2kg (4.4 lbs) at three months of life and awaits a medical discharge.
Baby Bianca was born at five months and a half and today, three months later, is breastfeeding and weighs 2kg (4.4 lbs).

A baby born at five and a half months, weighing just 620g, managed to survive, at the maternity ward of the Instituto de Perinatologia da Bahia (Iperba or Institute of Perinatology of Bahia). A rare case in medicine, that the maternity staff, which is in the neighborhood of Brotas, in Salvador, Bahia, considered a miracle. The period considered normal for a pregnancy is 9 months, being that cases of preterm birth with chances of survival usually occur at 8, 7 or 6 months.
Doctor Ana Paes, who followed the case of Bianca from the beginning, affirms that the story says that the child is “literally a miracle.” “Bianca was born exactly at the limit of viability. So she was an extreme premature (birth). The (medical) literature calls these children micro-babies. She has already started suckling and great triumph of this whole story is that Bianca, for a long time, in the semi-intensive care unit she used human milk from our milk bank and Rosiléia [the mother] will leave the maternity unit breastfeeding her exclusively from her breasts,” says the doctor.

Three months after birth, weighing 2kg, the girl will await medical discharge for the next few days. According to the press office of the health unit, the medical team looks forward to an examination of the heart in order to release the baby to go home.
Premature birth
The child’s mother, Rosiléia Conceição remembers that she felt pain and was admitted to the Iperba maternity unit. Two days later, still in pain, doctors decided to deliver the baby and informed the patient that the possibility of the baby surviving was very small.

“I had the child and the doctor had left me prepared and I was ready. It would be a miscarriage … When she [child] came out, the doctor looked at me and said: ‘Rosiléia, it’s in God’s hands. Are you strong?’ I said, I am strong. She took it and looked [at the baby] and said, ‘it looks like its moving.’ Then she took Bianca like this and chipped the little bag, that only had the bag without water, with nothing. When she chipped it, Bianca took it and breathed, she took a deep breath and started hitting her little face, so small and skinny, she didn’t even look like a child,” says the mother.
A photo of Bianca, taken three weeks after birth, shows how frail the girl was. According Rosiléia, after birth the child lost weight and dropped to 444g. “She was less than a pound. The times that anyone came to talk to me there was only crying really, I could only cry and nothing else,” she recalls.
Donations

The baby’s father, Dalton Conceição, is unemployed. He and Rosiléia have another child of 5 years. He says he is looking for a job to support the family. Dalton has experience in restaurant kitchens as well as general assistance. “Whatever comes to me I will accept,” he said.
A spokesperson for the Iperba said anyone interested in helping the family can make donations at the health facility. More information can be obtained by calling (71) 3116-5188.
