capaNote from BW of Brazil: On this blog we often tackle the topic of the low level of black representation in the media. But one very positive thing has come out of this media “blackout”: It has created an open market for those talented individuals who have fresh, intriguing views and styles that other black people/women are interested in. Last July, in an article about black female bloggers, we introduced the women bloggers who are filling the void in Brazil’s Eurocentric beauty market.” Today, in a similar fashion, we present to you five Afro-Brazilian women who have slowly carved out their own niche, gained a following and become highly influential “go to girls” for women seeking fresh fashion ideas.

YES! WE HAVE IT GIRLS!

I shared on Twitter that I don’t read blogs anymore that don’t mirror me. We talk a lot of representation and I truly believe in the idea. Since I began to understand my body as it is, I follow some blogs made me feel like the time in which I was a subscriber to Capricho (magazine) and had no identification with most things it published. It makes no sense to read about hair, trends, ways of dressing or makeup, for example, that don’t talk to me and don’t even try to talk to me. Today I like being able to imagine myself in whoever writes or speaks from the other side of the screen, you know? It’s rare to find in the “pop blogosphere” spaces that manage to put diversity in the content but we are a good tide of pretas (black women) sharing good things and the absence becomes increasingly insignificant.

Anyone who knows me knows: I am still bad at that moment of consuming pieces but I love references of the “I would really rock this look” type. I like very much seeing people that wear pieces in a cool way that inspires me in the way to dress. I remembered the reflection via Twitter when I talked to Monique, a beauty that you will know just below, and told you that for time I’ve had her as an inspiration. I read the blog that she writes. From our chat and a very cool article that I participated in came about this post. I brought forth some of the women that inspire my fashion look. All are always on some network posting cool looks. All brazucas (Brazilians) and Meninas Black Power are like us. It’s good to remember: I’m not getting anything for the post and also don’t consider myself #asuperstyledabalada. I love to make a Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V, actually. If you that are reading me are also like this, I continue here so that the chances of loving everything are huge!

I’ve followed her for some time and I super identify myself (with her). It enchants me the way she coordinates what she wears without falling into cliché, in the routine. Prints, colors, textures, elaborate makeup, bold looks, basic looks … It’s always a sea of information. She studies Fashion Design, has done incredible works inspired by Fresh Prince. Today she’s involved with Catsu, a fashion producer that was born some time ago and is already the topic. Follow Lilly here.

I think of a thousand possible colors for hair, prints and how to mix them in an interesting way when I think of Loo. No wonder she was cited by BuzzFeed among the 10 black most babadeiras (very good) to follow on Instagram, right? She studied Marketing and Cool Hunting, does fashion production and signs off on the Dresscoração brand in partnership with her sister Luma Nascimento. Besides this she’s is on personal projects like @iloostre, illustrations and paintings by her, and @looprodoo, a project of collective independent productions that are still taking shape. You can also find her on Tumblr. Loo’s profiles here.

She’s great at transforming pieces, people! In addition she’s a fan of braids and makes a bun of box braids that is perfect. It’s worth seeing. She graduated in Fashion Design, is currently working for Farm in Brasília, combines works of fashion production and stylist. I follow the Flambé blog, a creation of Monique, and recommend her for always having a new reference to absorb. You can find Monique here.

In addition to the amazing looks she is also great in varying hairstyles. This queen does cuts and needlework, in the second half of this year she will study Fashion. Another novelty is that she and her husband are working on a new clothing brand, Themba, which is not yet available on the web. You can find Thainá here.

Good and cheap it is with her, my people. You know everything about bargain, panning and finding good things where most probably wouldn’t find. I love all that creativity! Makeup for black women and incredible tips to test lipsticks are also strengths in this girl’s networks. She studied professional makeup, is a designer of eyebrows, and is training to be a hairdresser. It’s worth to see what she’s done on the page’s Urbana’s e Projeto Diversidade, by the photographer Marion Caruso. Viviane is also here.
