Lady Zu – The Brazilian Donna Summer

Lady Zu is the stage name of Zuleide Santos Silva, a disco singer who was nicknamed the “Brazilian Donna Summer”. Her career began in 1977 with the release of her first LP, A Noite Vai Chegar, the title song of which sold one million copies as a single. The song became popular due to its inclusion in the soap opera Sem Lenço, Sem Documento leading Lady Zu to become known as the “Rainha das DiscotecasBrasileiras” (Queen of the Brazilian discos). She would release two LPs at the end of the 1970s, an era in Brazilian Popular Music when many black as well as non-black artists were releasing music that was heavily influenced by American Soul, Funk and Disco. Lady Zu released CDs in 1989 and 2001 and remains active today. Below, check her out in a TV performance from 1979.
