The latest in the series Faces of Afro Brazil, Maíra Ortins is a 33 year old visual artist from Fortaleza, the capital and most populous city of northeastern state Ceará. Ceará has been featured in a number of recent posts covering topics such as racial identity, sexual tourism and the experience of an African immigrant in the state.
Appearing in the April edition of the Brazilian version of Claudia magazine, Maíra spoke of her career goal:
“My main objective is to give a boost to my career. To this end, I have studied quite a bit to compete for a scholarship in Europe or an artistic residency, an initiative in which various artists live together, exchange ideas on techniques and work collectively for a certain time.”
