Note from BW of Brazil: Today we present one of Rio de Janeiro’s most accomplished black women: a doctor, lawyer and professor all in one. Sharing her knowledge as a trained gynecologist, Dr. Berenice de Aguiar is featured below in a video interview about sexual health and education. Learn more about her below.
Dr. Berenice de Aguiar Silva is a Doctor, Lawyer and Professor. Born and raised in Isle do Governador (1) where she always studied in public institutions like Orlando Dantas school and Colégio Mendes de Moraes. Trained as a teacher at the Instituto de Educação do Rio de Janeiro (Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro), she has taught in various schools of the city.
As a doctor she did her medical residency and specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics after her graduation in 1977, at the Escola de Medecina e Cirurgia (School of Medicine and Surgery) in Rio de Janeiro. After 1978 she became a gynecologist on permanent staff of the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde (Municipal Health Department) at Paulino Werneck Hospital in Ilha do Governador where she retired in 1998. She currently practices medical at a private clinic in Ilha do Governador.
As an attorney she acted as conciliator of the 16ª Vara de Família do Tribunal de Justiça (16th Family Court), is a member of CIR – Comissão Inter Racial da OAB-RJ (Inter Racial Commission of OAB (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil or Brazilian Lawyer’s Guild of Rio de Janeiro) and is the Coordinator of the Comissão Permanente Jurídica do CEDINE (Standing Legal Committee of CEDINE) (Conselho Estadual do Direitos do Negro do RJ or State Council of the Rights of Blacks of Rio de Janeiro).
She participates in various areas of activism/other Social-Ethnic Institutions such as IPCN (Instituto das Culturas Negras (Institute of Black Cultures) (financial director), Fórum Estadual de Mulheres Negras (State Forum of Black Women) and of the PMDB (Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro) Women of Rio de Janeiro. She was a candidate for the office of councilor of the city, in the election of October 2012, registered under No. 15951 because she has profound knowledge of the needs and aspirations of the people of Rio and was prepared and secure to represent them in the Câmara dos Vereadores (House of Councillors).
