Note from BW of Brazil: Once again showing that one can find Afro-Brazilian women in various areas of society, we present to you Helena dos Santos Reis who was recently named to a very important position within the state of São Paulo. Even though I generally have conflicting thoughts when I think of the black community’s relationship with this organ whose duty is to serve and protect its citizens but is also one of the greatest murderers in the country, this is still an accomplishment worthy of recognition.

On Tuesday (3), Governor Geraldo Alckmin appointed Colonel MP (Military Police) Helena dos Santos Reis as the new chief secretary of the Casa Militar (Military House). Responsible for the Command of Policing of the Interior 5 (in the region of São José do Rio Preto), Helena replaces Colonel MP José Roberto Rodrigues de Oliveira.
Born in São José do Rio Preto, Helena Reis is the second woman to command the Governor’s Military House and the State Civil Defense Coordination.
From a family of Military Police officers, she joined the Barro Branco Academy in 1989. After four years of training, she worked until 1994 in the central region of São Paulo. In 1995, she was transferred to Catanduva and then to São José do Rio Preto, where she has remained since then. In 2014, she was head of the 3rd Seção do Estado Maior.
Promoted to colonel in March of 2015, Helena became responsible for the training course of Sergeants and, in May of the same year, commander of the Policing of Interior 5.
