Note from BW of Brazil: November is almost here! If you don’t already know, November is the annual Month of Black Consciousness celebrated in hundreds of cities across Brazil. And just from the plans and events this writer has already become aware of, this November is sure to be something worth remembering. Representation is a major theme both on this blog and in Afro-Brazilian social circles and the media is among the numerous areas of society in which this representation is sorely lacking. But what we’ve seen increasingly in recent years, are Afro-Brazilians stepping forward and filling this huge gap that the mainstream media continues produce. We’ve seen hundreds of blogs, websites, YouTube channels, theater and even the so-called Cinema Negro are just a few areas that talented black Brazilians are making their presence felt.
Today, courtesy of the Mundo Negro website, we present to you just a few of the independent media makers that who aren’t letting the lack of exposure of the mainstream media detract them from creating intriguing, entertaining content. There are simply too many of them to name all of them but in today’s feature check out a few who are slowly carving out their own niche and following online. A few of them have already been featured here at BW of Brazil.

Digital Black November: black communicators prepare special content for the month of black consciousness
By Silvia Nascimento
We complain about the lack of blacks on Globo or SBT TV, in major newspapers and magazines, but we forget that there is a very active and independent mídia negra (black media). What do you follow or know about them?
With the popularization of the Internet, it has become easy and inexpensive to create online communication vehicles. Since April of this year, Mundo Negro (Black World) site, through the project Negros Digitais has mapped and capacitated some vehicles of communication made by and for blacks. We’ve done courses like Youtube Black Brasil in partnership with YouTube Space and the Workshop online taught by Najda Pereira, of the Zero 54, a journalist specializing in social networks.

The project has grown to over 200 content producers, all blacks ranging from journalists to audiovisual producers, vloggers and photographers through a Facebook group that exchanges information, teaches and learns and also makes many partnerships.

Beauty, cooking, empowerment, humor, interviews, relationship tips, news, literature. They are very topics discussed by these very well informed and conscious communicators.
Black November
For the month of November which commemorates the month of black consciousness, due to the murder of Zumbi on the 20th, Mundo Negro has partnered with some black-themed vehicles and jointly publish unpublished content over this, such a special month. There are channels of videos, comic strips, events and even an unprecedented research on the behavior of the comunidade negra (black community) on the Internet.

Great stuff. IMHO blacks should either go to the public sector (in particular, we need more black judges) or open their own business – anything else we go backwards. I see blacks with all sorts of talents in Brazil working for incompetent, dumb white people with “universities'” degrees.
Oops, I meant this comment for the previous post – I clicked wrong. My bad.
Great article. Has foreign investment been sought to grow Black media in Brazil?
