Camila Pitanga is the Brazilian personality that has appeared in more TV commercials in the period between January and May 24th of this year, according to Veja magazine. The actress beat out media darlings like world famous supermodel Gisele Bundchen and soccer superstar Neymar, who also starred in various media campaigns in 2011. According to the publication, Camila appeared 2,427 times in this period.

Pitanga is known for her roles in various Brazilian novelas and her success is very important in a country like Brazil where black activists have long denounced the invisibility of Afro-Brazilians in Brazil’s mainstream media. Some may argue that Pitanga’s success doesn’t reflect true diversity in the media because of her fair skin, but make no mistake, Camila is the daughter of prominent Afro-Brazilian actor Antonio Pitanga and and becomes very annoyed when people question why she identifies herself a black woman.
The actress has also been prominent in social causes and engaged in politically correct causes. She was chosen to be the poster child of the yearly Arraial da Providência event (1). For charity work, the actress did not charge fee. A few weeks ago, she broke protocol during a ceremony attended by President Dilma Rousseff and former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to request that the President veto the new project of the Código Florestal Brasileiro (Brazilian Forest Code) (2). chosen to be master of ceremonies, Camila interrupted the presentation of authorities to say, “Veto, Dilma”, and was applauded for her proclamation.
