Note from BW of Brazil: As this blog has highlighted several times over the past several months, black models are regularly under-represented in Brazil’s top fashion shows such as Fashion Rio and the São Paulo Fashion Week. So, it’s kinda cool to be able to publish some good news. Now let’s not get it twisted; good news about black modeling success such as yesterday’s feature on the twins from Bahia and today’s post about Rio’s Karen Rodrigues by no means voids the reality of the invisibility of Brazil’s black models, but it’s also true that every piece of success is a cause for celebration. So check it out’chall.

In every fashion week there is always a record-setting model in the number of designer brands modeled in the show. In Fashion Rio Verão (Summer) 2014, among the newcomers, this post was occupied by Karen Rodrigues. “This season I will do all ten parades, not counting the Rio Moda Hype,” said the Rio resident, 18, who crossed the catwalk wearing brands like Salinas, Blue Man, Coven, Sacada and Iódice.
Despite having started modeling two years ago, Karen said she was still getting used to the frenzy of modeling parades: “It’s a rush, but I’m enjoying it quite a bit. I’m still getting used to it.”
